Installation Issues

When trying to run the application, the wait cursor shows briefly then nothing further happens. This error is caused by .NET components missing from the device. Please ensure that you have installed the latest service pack for the .NET Compact Framework.
I appreciate that this is not always possible, but in all cases where a hard-reset has been performed and the application has subsequently been reinstalled, the problem has been resolved.

I get an error stating "Could not find resource assembly". This error is caused by the system failing to find the component that contains descriptive text explaining system errors. This file is sometimes not included by device manufacturers to save space.
Please see the downloads page for an additional file that you can install to display a diagnostic message relating to the underlying error.

I am running Windows Mobile 6.5 on an HTC device and cannot find anywhere to enter the Device Owner Name. This is not a change in Windows Mobile, but it is the HTC Sense layer on top of it that is obscuring the underlying Windows Mobile features.
It may be possible to use the HTC ”My Contact Card” to set the device owner name. Alternatively you can turn the HTC Sense off (via Settings\All Settings\Today\Items) and this will restore the underlying Windows Mobile features. Once you have set the Device Owner Name you and reactivate HTC Sense.

The COM port for my GPS does not appear in the setup dropdown list. I have tried to simplify the COM port selection by providing a dropdown list with entries obtained from the registry. It has become apparent that different devices use different registry values to identify COM ports, and that some 'virtual' com ports are not shown. If you click on the small "+" icon adjacent to the dropdown, the dropdown list will be replaced with a textbox to allow direct entry of the numeric COM port value.

I have checked the Bluetooth checkbox but this does not have any effect or causes an error. Devices that use the Microsoft Bluetooth drivers can make use of this feature. Other devices that use the Widcomm or other drivers will not be able to use this feature and should leave the Bluetooth checkbox unchecked.

Frequently Asked Questions

The compass and position do not appear to get updated when I am moving slowly. Is there anything I can do anout this? If your GPS uses SiRF StarIII it is possible that you are using a feature called Static Navigation, which is intended to help removing any drift (small variations of the position) while you are not actually moving. There are a number of software utilities that you can use to configure this. I suggest Memory-Map SiRF Setup. Install it like any other PPC application. You must check that you do not have any GPS applications running before using this application via Start\Settings\System\Memory\Running Apps. When you run the application, you should select the appropriate COM Port and Baud Rate (COM2, 57600 for my device) and then tap the "Turn SN off" button. If you receive an acknowledgment message then your GPS is configured.

Does GeoScout make use of WAAS/EGNOS enhancements? WAAS and EGNOS are features of youe GPS. If your GPS uses SiRF, there are a number of software utilities that you can use to configure this. I suggest Memory-Map SiRF Setup. Install it like any other PPC application. You must check that you do not have any GPS applications running before using this application via Start\Settings\System\Memory\Running Apps. When you run the application, you should select the appropriate COM Port and Baud Rate (COM2, 57600 for my device) and then tap the appropriate options button.

The compass does not show the correct bearing when I stand still. Why is this? Your GPS does not actually contain a compass, so the bearing to a cache can only be calculated when you are moving sufficiently for the GPS to register your movements. The GPS can then take the differences between the current and previous positions to work out your direction of travel, and hence the bearing to your objective.
